They say Thomas Jefferson left Washington for Monticello on his lonesome, riding Martha (named for his deceased and much mourned wife).

TRUE FACT: Jefferson seriously thought there could still be mammoths in the American west and if Louis and Clark saw one they were to kill it and send it back because god be damned he would show that french asshole, Buffon, that American animals are totally bigger than European ones.
